This essay is gorgeous. Without a wasted word, you expressed so much - about being a mother, and letting go, while yearning to hold on. So much stopped me - from the open backgammon game to the empty wine glass. The longing all parents have for silence vs the thud of the actual silence is so well explored here. Beautiful, Laura. Also, I'm now craving white wine and french fries.
