Your essay got to me - I love the way you wrote it and understand so much of what you feel. The line about the subway door closing on wild youth stopped me in my tracks- I read I twice. For what it's worth, I think there are all kinds of domestic situations that are both pleasurable and terrifying - those spent with others and those spent in solitude.
